Tunnel and track-laying for the 35-mile Gotthard Base Tunnel beneath the Swiss Alps was completed, making it the longest tunnel in the world, reports Business Insider.
The Gotthard Pass will serve as a direct link between Switzerland and Northern Italy. Four German-made tunnel boring machines were used to dig out the tunnel.

Nearly 2,000 workers worked on the massive project, which required excavating 31 million tons of earth from beneath the Swiss Alps. Eight workers died since construction began in 1996, according to Business Insider.
The first passenger and freight trains are scheduled to pass through the tunnel by June 2016.
