Worker Shortage Hampers Texas Construction Projects

July 8, 2015

Two toll lanes are being added as part of the MoPac Improvement Project in Austin, Texas, but there aren't enough construction workers to complete the work, reports KVUE.

Even companies that do provide training and higher wages are struggling to find and keep workers. The MoPac project pays between $15 and $20 an hour, which is above average for construction workers, and the contractor provides training. The project needs an additional 100 workers, according KVUE.

"The primary reason [for the shortage] is because they're all busy working on other projects," said Craig Martell, who works with project contractor CH2M told KVUE.

"There's so much work here in Central Texas, that the available, experienced construction staff is just not there."
