Video: 'Signature' Design May Have Caused FIU Bridge Collapse

Unconventional placement of diagonal supports in an uneven zig-zag pattern created weakness

The Miami Herald writes the Florida International University's pedestrian bridge that collapsed March 15 was designed with a greater emphasis on style than on function.

The newspaper had three independent structural engineers review nearly 2,000 pages of calculations for the bridge at the Miami Herald's request. Their findings included observations such as while the structure looked like a cable-stayed bridge, in fact the 'cables' were just decorative steel pipes offering no actual support.
