A construction worker was crushed Wednesday morning when a concrete slab weighing 30,000 to 40,000 pounds fell off a flatbed truck and onto him at a construction site for a parking garage, part of an apartment complex being built in southeast Austin.

The Austin Fire Department responded to reports of a worker pinned under the preformed wall section at the Edison apartment complex being developed by Cadence McShane Construction near East Riverside Drive and Pleasant Valley Road.

Austin Fire Chief Palmer Buck said special operations firefighters using concrete saws and sledgehammers started working to chisel through and get through the concrete but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
