WPLG/Local10 news shares this video of a section of the $14.2 million bridge at Southwest 8th Street and Southwest 109th Avenue being lifted into place last Saturday.
The bridge will connect Florida International University with the city of Sweetwater.
FIU is the home of the Center for Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC), so installing this first-of-its-kind pedestrian bridge segment, constructed using ABC methods, is a notable achievement for the university. The university said the modular construction method reduces potential risks to workers, commuters and pedestrians and minimizes traffic interruptions.
When complete, the 289-foot long bridge will replace the student shuttle that transports students across 8th Avenue.
The concrete used to make the segment is infused with titanium dioxide which traps pollutants and turns them bright white, according to the university.
