The team from the University of Wisconsin — Platteville finished first in the safety category at the recent Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) seventh annual Student Construction Management Competition in Nashville, Tenn.
Teams of four students representing 24 colleges and universities from across the nation competed in the contest's first round, with five finalist teams advancing to a second round for the overall title.
Teams competed in three areas: project management/scheduling, estimating and safety. Awards were given in each area, as well as an overall award for highest total points.
The overall winner was the University of Cincinnati, with the University of Florida finishing second, and Brigham Young University third.
Also competing from Wisconsin was The University of Wisconsin — Stout.
This year's competition focused on a bid-day format for an office building in Birmingham, Ala. Teams were given subcontractor bids every 15 minutes and were required to submit an overall bid form. The teams then had to assemble and present supporting materials justifying calculations in their bids.
