A new study by the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that “wage theft” in the Massachusetts construction industry is widespread.

In the past 18 months, the Massachusetts attorney general’s office has issued more wage violation citations against employers in the construction industry than in any other sector — 253 citations in total, resulting in more than $1.6 million being recovered in penalties and unpaid wages.

Immigrants hired by subcontractor are particularly vulnerable, sometimes going weeks without pay and overtime pay being virtually nonexistent, reports The Boston Globe
