A backhoe-loader is most stable for backhoe work when it is set up as a tripod with the two stabilizers and the loader bucket as its three legs. Stabilizers should be spread for the widest platform possible — not fully extended, but down far enough to raise the rear tires off the ground.
If the hydraulics tend to pull the machine toward the trench when digging, there are two ways to stop the sliding.
- Move the machine closer to the work so that the backhoe is doing more lifting than pulling.
- Change the angle of the machine by raising the front end with the loader hydraulics. The machine will pull at a more aggressive angle into the ground.
