A backhoe-loader was partially swallowed by a 10-foot-wide sinkhole in Bedford, Massachusetts, Thursday morning when erosion from a water main break caused the road to give way, police said.
Workers responding to an early morning water main break were unaware the water had destabilized the ground beneath the pavement. The backhoe was sucked down into several feet of mud, eventually coming to rest on its side. The operator was not hurt.
