Noble Energy will spend about $8 billion over the next five years to expand its operations in Eastern Colorado's Niobrara Shale formation. Some $1.3 billion of that investment will occur this year.

The company, which has identified 4,000 sites expected to take 10 to 15 years to drill, works with 120 contractors that have hired thousands of workers, Chuck Davidson, Noble's CEO, told The Denver Post.
