Researchers at Virginia Tech developed a prototype safety vest that alerts construction workers if a collision is about to occur.
Development of the InZoneAlert vest began in 2013 and uses GPS to track a worker’s movement and shortwave radio sensors that can connect with a vehicles connected technology.
The vest alert system was successful 90 percent of the time during tests. Various alerts are being tested and must work within loud and busy construction sites.
InZoneAlert is currently being tested to see how it performs at highway speeds at Virginia Smart Road in Blacksburg, Va., and the I-64 corridor near Fairfax, Va.
