Paccar is recalling 1,938 heavy-duty Perterbilt and Kenworth diesel tractors due to a software problem that incorrectly illuminates which gear the transmission shifter is in.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) safety recall report 18V-092, the software in the UltraShift Plus transmission is not reporting the proper Shifter Stalk position to the cab controller which drives the D-N-R display.

Vehicles equipped with an automated transmission incorporate a 2-part driver's display. Once section of the display indicates the actual gear the transmission has attained within a circular gear icon.

The other section (the D-N-R display) is intended to indicate the gear the driver has selected on the transmission shifter control by illuminating the ‘D’ - drive, ‘N’ - neutral, or ‘R’ - reverse.Under certain conditions, affected vehicles will incorrectly illuminate the ‘N’ on the D-N-R display, when the transmission shifter control is in the ‘D’ or 'R' position. As a result, the truck will not move.

Trucks affected are: Kenworth 2017-2018 T680 and T880 (produced between Nov.16, 2016 - Dec 22, 2017) and Peterbilt 2017-2018 567 and 579 (produced between Nov.17, 2016 - Dec.31, 2017) with automated Eaton UltraShift Plus or Eaton Advantage Transmission with right hand stalk shifter.

The vehicles affected will have the transmission software updated free of charge. Dealers will be notified March 2, 2018 and owners will be notified April 2, 2018.
