The Asphalt Pavement Association of Michigan (APAM) awarded the Chrysler High Speed Oval Test Track in Chelsea the Award of Excellence in the Special/Challenging Projects Category at the recent APAM-Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Asphalt Paving Awards Banquet. APAM honored Ajax Paving Industries, Inc.; Chrysler, LLC; Wilcox Professional Services; and Soil and Materials Engineers, Inc. (SME) for their work on this project.
At the High Speed Oval Test Track, SME provided construction materials services for the reconstruction of approximately 4.6 miles of the six-lane test track, consisting of high performance asphalt concrete. SME's services included evaluating existing subgrade soil conditions, observing fill placement, performing in-place density tests, reviewing asphalt paving operations, and performing quality control services related to asphalt mixtures.
APAM also awarded The Mall at Partridge Creek, Macomb County's newest shopping center, the Award of Merit in the Commercial Projects Category. APAM honored the Taubman Company; John Carlo, Inc.; Skanska USA; and SME for their efforts on this project.
At The Mall at Partridge Creek, SME performed a geotechnical evaluation and provided recommendations for pavement design. During construction of the 640,000-square-foot open-air shopping center, SME provided construction materials services for pavements as well as foundations, structural steel, soil density, and concrete.
