Pittsburgh International Airport will undergo a $1.1 billion modernization

Pittsburgh International Airport is primed to take off with a $1.1 billion modernization plan unveiled Tuesday with the approval of the Allegheny County Airport Authority.

The new airport proposal calls for the current landside building to be demolished and replaced with a new $783.8 million structure with new security and baggage facilities, and a reconfigured international arrivals area.

Another $258.8 million will go for a parking garage and $457.1 million is tagged for roads.

The authority says demolishing the landside building is cheaper than revamping the 25-year old structure originally built as a single-hub for US Airways. Total number of gates will be 51.

Ground breaking should be in 2019 with a completion date of 2023.
