A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Retrop junction of SH-6 and SH-55E with Elk City and Altus civic and business leaders, joined by legislators and ODOT officials, opened the new section of four-lane highway. The improvement is part of an overall plan to widen the Altus-to-Elk City corridor to four lanes. The recently completed project included a bridge and new alignment from just south of Retrop to Sadler Creek, located just north of SH-55W.
Paving of the new alignment was contracted to Dobson Bros. Construction Co. Bridge construction and earthwork was awarded to Sewell Brothers, Inc., and was finished in May 2007.
The next portion of the SH-6 improvement is a segment five miles north of SH-9, extending north 3.7 miles. Work on that segment is expected to begin in September.
