CNH Industrial confirmed Monday that about 105 full-time workers will be laid off indefinitely from the Mount Pleasant tractor plant. The plant now has about 520 production workers, all members of United Auto Workers Local 180.
Spokeswoman Kathleen Prause said employees were informed of the impending layoffs on Monday. A written statement said CNH Industrial layoffs at the tractor plant is in response to "market conditions.” This is the third layoff since 2014. The indefinite layoff is expected to begin this month, she said.
Jeff Vassh, president of United Auto Workers Local 180, said he expects the next round of layoffs to slow tractor manufacturing there by another 20 percent. He said union representatives will talk to CNH about the possibility of bringing in additional work such as assembly or sub-assembly work that is now contracted out.
