A 2.5-mile concrete reconstruction of Cass Avenue and Romeo Plank Road in Macomb County, MI, that began in March was expected to be completed by November. The existing two-lane asphalt road was reconstructed into a five-lane concrete road with two roundabouts; one at Cass Avenue and Romeo Plank Road and another one at 19 Mile Road and Romeo Plank Road.

Six-S, Inc., of Waterford Township, MI, was the prime contractor for the project. Six-S paved 36 feet wide, which eliminated one stage of paving. The alternative would've been to pave 24 feet across with a 12-foot center section. The two roundabouts are variable-width roundabouts.

"With variable widths, you have different longitudinal joint patterns. You slip form one lane and then another lane," Six-S's Gary Evangelista said.

The approximately $6.2-million project included 50,549 square yards of pavement removal; 81,544 square yards of 12-inch deep sand subbase; 6 inches of aggregate base; and approximately 74,000 square yards of 9-inch P-1 non-reinforced concrete pavement.

Subcontractors on the project included Miller Brothers Construction, of Archbold, OH (milling); Barrett Paving Materials, Inc. (temporary asphalt paving); State Barricade, of Warren, MI (traffic control); GM & Sons, Inc., of Whitmore Lake, MI (sidewalks, driveways and curbs); C&G Myers, of Milford, MI (underground work); Rauhorn Electric (traffic signal work); and P.K. Contracting, of Troy (striping).

Six-S, Inc. uses a Guntert & Zimmerman paver on Cass Avenue.
