An approximately 16-1/2-mile, 1-1/2-inch-thick asphalt overlay 5E03 mix on M-183 in Delta County, MI, included some cold milling in the village of Garden, where some existing elevations had to be tied into. M-183 is a two-lane road. The project ran from US-2 to Fayette State Park.
A tack was applied in order to bond the new pavement to the existing micro-surfaced pavement, which was still in good condition. Bonding the two surfaces together provides greater strength. The project is expected to extend the life of the pavement another 10 to 12 years.
Payne & Dolan, of Gladstone, MI, was the prime contractor for the approximately $1.4-million project. The project began in July and it was completed in August.
"This was a preventive maintenance project," Tom Ritter, project manager for Payne & Dolan, said.
The project included approximately 23,000 tons of 5E03 mix with a 5834 asphalt-cement binder, and guardrail upgrades.
