Lifting Report: JLG’s New Specialty-Boom-Lifts

Jan. 24, 2011

JLG identifies the four models in its newest range as “specialty-boom lifts.” These new machines use four, multi-position outriggers, which can be deployed on uneven work surfaces and in confined spaces to create a level lifting base. Widely used in the European construction market, the specialty-boom lift is a relative newcomer in North America, but JLG expects that the machine’s utility will promote ready acceptance.

The new models use rotating articulated booms that provide platform heights of 39, 50, 55 and 70 feet. Maximum horizontal outreach ranges from 21 to 37 feet. According to JLG, a rubber-track undercarriage, combined with the lightweight design of the new models, allows these new access lifts to travel over delicate flooring materials, through rough terrain and, if the situation demands, to climb steps. Control features include auto-leveling, in-platform diagnostics and electro-hydraulic actuation.

Compact dimensions (minimum widths range from 31 to 39 inches) make the new models maneuverable, says JLG, and allow them to be easily loaded for transport in smaller trucks and trailers. Operating weights range from approximately 3,100 to 6,600 pounds. The new lifts are available with gasoline, diesel or lithium-ion power. Gasoline engines are Honda GX and iGX models, and diesel engines are Hatz models, except for the 70-foot model, which uses a Perkins 402.05.

The new JLG specialty-boom lifts will be produced to JLG specifications by Hinowa, S.p.A. Hinowa will continue to market and sell Hinowa-branded specialty-boom lifts through its distributors in Europe, while JLG will market these products to its network of distributors and customers and will be responsible for providing parts, repair and maintenance, training and technical support.

Markets that JLG anticipates for the new product range include light construction, landscaping/tree-trimming, signage installation and maintenance, renovation work and commercial/residential maintenance.  According to JLG, the company now can offer the customer a “one-stop shop” for access products ranging from small scissors lifts to large booms and telehandlers. JLG expects to have the new specialty-boom-lift models ready for delivery in early 2011.
