Environmental groups Openlands, Sierra Club and the Midewin Heritage Association filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration to prevent the construction of the Illiana Expressway, according to Roads & Bridges magazine.

The complaint alleges that the Indiana and Illinois DOTs failed to provide evidence that the 46-mile expressway is necessary in the environmental impact study. In the complaint, the organizations state that construction of the highway would destroy 1,500 acres of farmland, 64 acres of forest and 34 acres of wetland.
