KenworthA split exhaust system, for Cat-powered dump trucks requiring heated bodies, places the catalytic converter on the frame under the cab, and one or two mufflers in vertical stacks. The exhaust cut-out box is behind the converter, and is routed to the body's floor chambers to prevent materials from sticking to the floor. Government regulations say the combination catalytic converter/muffler used on "Cat-engined" trucks may not be bypassed; the independent converter solves this problem because exhaust still passes through the converter before going to the dump body.
