Jobless Claims Reach 9-Month High

December 20, 2013

Filings for state unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly last week to 379,000, according to Reuters. This 10,000-claim increase for the week ended Dec.14 is the highest jobless total since March and is attributed to seasonal, year-end layoffs.

A Bloomberg survey of economists suggests revising the total down to 336,000. According to the Bloomberg report, a Labor Department spokesperson recommended focusing on the four-week average number of jobless claims during the holiday season.
