Of the four product lines that make up JLG Industries’ family of telehandlers, the JLG G6-42A is the only homegrown JLG product. Because it was a clean sheet design, this machine has a unique look, design, and feel.
Maximizing visibility was a key driver in the development of the G6-42A, which is addressed with its three-section, high-mounted boom and how it is mounted to the frame. This unobtrusive mounting design was influenced by the Gradall product, which is now designated as the JLG P Series. According to Brian Boeckman, telehandler product parent, the idea behind JLG’s high-pivot boom design allows the operator to easily see underneath the boom when in the load-carrying position. Combined with two mirrors, the view is exceptional.
Frame design is integral to the visibility parameters. The center spine, or backbone, design is narrow, allowing the side-mounted engine to sit close to the operator. The tighter it sits, the better the line of sight to the right side of the machine. The narrow chassis also allows room for a wider cab, another component of visibility.
Even though the JLG G6-42A is a high-mounted boom product, it is designed to sit low, producing a balanced, low center of gravity while still delivering 16.4 inches of ground clearance.
The boom is designed to operate quickly for improved productivity. The machine also can take 1,000 pounds to the maximum 29-foot horizontal outreach.
A 99-hp John Deere 4.5L 4045T turbocharged diesel engine is side-mounted and drives the Dana VDT-12000 powershift transmission and axles. Hydraulic flow is provided by a load-sensing piston pump. All major component and service points are located under the lockable ABS composition hood. With everything out in the open, service access is excellent to everything except the starter. Intake air is pulled through a two-stage dry air cleaner. It is centrifugally pre-cleaned with continuous dust ejection and also incorporates a replaceable dry filter element. Additionally, the G6-42A has a visual service indicator.
The low overall design also facilitates access to the cab, which features a well-positioned suspension seat. The variety of control options is a key feature of the G6-42A. One configuration has lift/lower, telescope and frame sway/fork tilt to be controlled by two right-hand controls. For simultaneous operation, the auxiliary hydraulics can controlled with a left-hand joystick on the dash.
The rest of the dash contains a four-in-one analog gauge, which allows the operator to monitor critical engine functions, like engine oil pressure, coolant temperature, battery levels, and fuel. A light on the dash indicates if the transmission oil is operating too warm.
The JLG G6-42A featured a 72-inch carriage and an 8-foot fork-mounted factory designed and produced work platform. To expand its versatility, JLG has implemented a standard coupling system across all brands of its construction telehandlers. Previously, the JLG, SkyTrak, and Lull brands featured different couplers, requiring a unique set of attachments for each brand. According to Boeckman, standardizing the coupler will reduce customers’ costs and minimize and simplify their inventory of attachments.
