It's Wheels Up as Work Officially Begins on LGA

June 15, 2016

Vice President Joe Biden, who in 2014 said, “If I blindfolded someone and took them at 2 o’clock in the morning into the airport in Hong Kong and said ‘where do you think you are?’ They’d say ‘this must be America, it’s a modern airport.’ If I took him blindfolded and took him into LaGuardia Airport in New York, you must think you must be in some third world country. I’m not joking," joined New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for Tuesday's groundbreaking ceremonies on the more than $4 billion overhaul of LGA's Central Terminal.

The remodel will reconfigure the airport's current footprint and build a new 1.3 million square foot terminal with 35 gates. Officials say LGA will be fully operational during the overhaul.

Two-thirds of the project will be funded by private financing and passenger fees. “If it goes over budget, that is on the private team doing this and not on the Port Authority,” said Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye.

Completed renovation is expected to arrive in 2022.
