International Makes Hybrid Pickup Truck

International's 7300 4x4 has a 215-hp DT466, Allison 2000 automatic, and Meritor axles and transfer case. The floor of its modified GM dually bed sits 62.5 inches off the ground-too high to load your refrigerator, maybe, but just the right height to dominate your neighbor's Hummer.

Is International going into the pickup-truck business? No, but this big red pickup shown off at a recent ride-and-drive event near Phoenix has gotten a lot of attention.

It started with a 7300 4×4 cab-and-chassis displayed at World of Concrete in Las Vegas, according to Bill Sixsmith, a vocational marketing manager at International's Warrenville, Ill., headquarters. The 27,000-pound-GVW crewcab truck got a lot of attention as it was, and Sixsmith and others got the idea of fitting it with a pickup bed.

A custom shop operated by I-10 International in Phoenix took a General Motors 8-foot "dually" bed and lengthened it with a 20-inch fiberglass extension at its front. It sits high on the frame so it lines up with the air-suspended cab, said Sixsmith.
