Illinois Governor Cuts Transportation Funding to Fill Budget Gap

March 25, 2015

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner created a short-term budget fix to resolve the state's $1.6 billion state deficit. The plan, sponsored by Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, would cut approximately $1.3 billion designated for specific uses including road construction projects, which stand to lost $350 million. Another $130 million will be taken away from funds set aside for transit.

This budget cut comes at an inopportune time for the Illinois Department of Transportation, which is struggling to keep up with current infrastructure needs.

The measure passed the House 69-48, with 46 of the 47 Republicans voting in favor of the Republican governor's budget plan.
