Operator-training videotapes from VISTA say that every piece of construction equipment should have a fire extinguisher on board. Machine maintenance schedules should include checking regularly (at least monthly) to be sure the fire extinguisher is charged and easy to access.

In the event of a fire, VISTA recommends a simple, safety-first approach.

  1. Call the fire department first.
  2. When using the fire extinguisher, make sure there is a clear escape route in case the fire gets out of hand.
  3. If the extinguisher's range is too short to reach the source of the flames without putting you in danger, wait for the emergency professionals.
