The 10,800-pound Zaxis 50U-3 is one of three mini excavators Hitachi has advanced to the Dash-3 Series with a diesel engine certified to EPA Tier 4 Interim emissions requirements. Hitachi says the 38.1 horsepower diesel’s fuel economy exceeds that of the previous model. Auxiliary hydraulics are now operated from a switch positioned atop the right-hand pilot lever. A hydraulically adjustable angle blade for backfilling is a new option. Buttons on top of the blade control lever swing the blade 25 degrees left or right for backfilling efficiency. Maximum dig depth of 11 feet 8 inches can be extended to 12 feet 8 inches with added counterweight and a longer stick.
