Highway & Heavy Firms Restrain Enthusiasm

Early this year, Giant contractors reported the best work-volume forecasts construction firms have made since 2000. But the largest segment of construction Giants, highway-and-heavy contractors, delivered the most conservative 2004 forecasts. While 61 percent of industrial contractors and general building contractors expect 2004 to be a very good or excellent business year, only 45 percent of highway-and-heavy Giants are as bullish.

Their outlook is indeed remarkably brighter than it has been for four years, but uncertainty over federal-transportation funding is clearly restraining highway-and-heavy contractors' enthusiasm.
