Heavy Construction Spending Declined in December

February 4, 2011

Heavy construction spending declined 0.4% in December but is 6.0% above a year ago after a dip earlier this year. Two-thirds of the gain during 2010 was for power construction and one-third was for highway construction.

But both of these gains are misleading since both sectors briefly had unusually low activity a year ago. Heavy construction spending fell 1.3% in 2010 vs. 2009. The current trend is steady to very slightly up but up strongly enough to cover project cost increases.
