One of California’s largest heavy construction companies whose workers have built highways and other public projects throughout the state, is retrenching as the impact of the Great Recession lingers.

Granite Construction Inc. of Watsonville says it is firing 227 employees – 13 percent of its salaried workforce -- to save money.
