"A city that is powered by the sun? It had never been done before, anywhere in the world," said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of the state utility company Florida Power and Light (FPL).
Work has finally begun on the new city being developed by Kitson & Partners on 17,000 acres northeast of Fort Myers. Aiming to be self-sustaining, the town will include the world's largest photovoltaic power plant, which will be operated by Florida Power & Light. Power from the 443 acre solar farm will go directly to the planned 21,000 homes in the development. The first 1,100 homes should be completed by 2017.
