Nevada's transportation board gave the go-ahead on Monday for the five-mile long widening of U.S. 93 at Interstate 15 for access to the Faraday Future automotive plant currently under construction in Apex, NV.
The improvements to U.S. 93 will expand the road from two to four lanes and include a frontage road at Grand Valley Parkway inside the Apex Industrial Park. Parsons Brinckerhoff is performing the preliminary design, engineering and environmental work. Originally slated for completion in 2019, the USA Parkway extension is being fast-tracked using the design-build method of construction and is scheduled to open to traffic by late 2017. The design-build process will allow the Department of Transportation to concurrently pursue the environmental clearance while proceeding with the preparation of the design-build documents, shaving off a year for the completion of the project.
Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval plans to break ground today on the USA Parkway extension connecting Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 50 through Storey and Lyon counties. The project was part of a deal to bring Tesla’s battery manufacturing gigafactory to the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center east of Reno.
NDOT estimates drivers will reduce their travel times by 38 percent when the project is finished.
Ames Construction is the contractor for the 12-mile project with a $75.9 million bid.
