Exxon Selects Texas County for $10B Cracker Plant

Project expected to bring 6,000 construction jobs

August 31, 2017

Exxon Mobil and Saudi Basic Industries Corp. have selected Portland, Texas, in San Patricio County, for its 1,300-acre ethylene cracker plant.

The proposed Gulf Coast Growth Ventures (GCGV) plastics manufacturing plant has pushed back its preliminary site work due to the hurricane but will be assisting the hard hit communities in the area by providing heavy equipment and workers to help in the clean up. Bay Ltd. was awarded the first two subcontracts for the project on Monday.

“We are heartbroken at the damage this hurricane has inflicted on the Coastal Bend and the devastation it created in so many lives,” Bay Ltd. CEO Edward Martin said in a prepared statement on Monday. “Our team and our equipment is on the way to help Gregory, Portland, Ingleside and neighboring communities.”

According to GCGV spokesperson, Jared Young, the company expects to employee 75 workers during site prep and slowly ramp up to 6,000 workers during peak construction.
