Drone Inspects Bridge in North Carolina

March 4, 2021

The North Carolina Department of Transportation used a drone to inspect the Marc Basnight Bridge last month. The bridge, which crosses the Oregon Inlet, is the first in the state inspected via drone.

Operators flew the drone to inspect the bridge’s 10 largest columns, monitoring high-definition video feeds. NCDOT was able to fly the drone around the pillars, between girders, and inside columns. It has a waiver from the FAA to allow operation beyond visual line of sight.
