A drilling rig fell over at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Monday, trapping a construction worker in a 30-foot hole.
The accident happened about 9:30 a.m. while working on the airport's Sky Train guideway system. The rig's operator is believed to be dead.
AZCentral.com reports tthat rescue crews worked until almost midnight Monday to find the worker but were unable to move the rig, despite removing some of the machine's heaviest components.
Today, the Phoenix Fire Department plants to bring in a larger crane to lift the rig.
Due to the complicated nature of the incident and specialized resources needed to move the toppled equipment, access to the recently excavated hole could take an extended amount of time, Capt. Jake Van Hook with the Phoenix Fire Department said.
The worker's name has not been released.
