Demolition of Sprint Tower at Daytona International Speedway begins

"Big Red," the 490-foot Manitowoc 2250 Crawler Crane, will begin tearing down the Sprint Tower as part of the $400 million Daytona Rising construction project. The crane weighs 500 tons, including its counterweight of 462,000 lb, and will require a demolition crew of approximately 30 members.

According to Barton Marlow, the project contractor, the interior of the tower must be gutted before the old steel structure can be removed. The crane will remove 30 large individual sections of the tower totaling 1,000 gross tons of steel. Once the tower comes down, Barton Marlow will call back 60 to 70 workers to finish placing the new steel structure.

The Daytona Rising project is scheduled to be complete in January 2016.
