July 23, 2015

The tunnel boring machine named “Lady Bird”, tasked with building a new a sewer tunnel more than 100 feet under the Potomac River, is expected to resurface in one week, reports The Washington Post.

After digging 4 ½ miles underground over the past two years, crews are prepped to bring Lady Bird to the surface using a crane to carry it more than 100 feet through a vertical shaft.

When Lady Bird does emerge, another boring machine will take its place to complete the $2.6 billion sewer project, according to WSJ.

“She’s done,” said John Lisle, a spokesman with the DC Water department.
