After years of neglect and being declared unfit for occupancy in 2009, the Houston Astrodome may be heading towards new life.
Harris County commissioners voted Tuesday to spend $10.5 million to fund the initial redevelopment design of the Dome's revival. Plans call for more than 550,000 square feet of air-conditioned event space. Parking fees, hotel taxes and county funds are expected to cover the cost of the redevelopment.
The Astrodome opened in 1965. Voters in 2013 rejected a $217 million bond for renovations. County officials say the rehabbed Astrodome will be ready in early 2020.
