The construction sector added 17,000 jobs in May, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The unemployment rate rose from 5.4 percent to 5.5 percent because additional people entered the jobs market, BLS said. March payrolls were revised upward and April's downward for a net gain of about 32,000 jobs added during those months.

Nonfarm payrolls were up 280,000 in May, according to the same data.
