Caterpillar's Cuts Touch Tucson Proving Grounds

Caterpillar's global cost-cutting efforts have hit its Tucson-area Tinaja Hills proving ground.

According to the Arizona Daily Star and, the company has laid off an "undisclosed" number of workers. Caterpillar’s Tucson Proving Ground employed about 300 workers as of May, when it announced it would move a regional headquarters and some 600 jobs to a new office in downtown Tucson over a period of several years. A Cat spokesperson has said the cuts are mainly to the company's "flexible workforce," parlance for contract and part-time personnel.
