Forbes online contributor and analytics expert Bernard Marr has published a piece describing how the Marine Division at Caterpillar is using data to help tug boat fleets manage fuel.
In one instance cited by Marr, a fleet of eight ships is expected to save $400,000 per ship simply by cleaning the hulls more often. Operational data tied to fuel usage led to the Eureka moment, Marr writes.
Caterpillar execs running the program suggest that without the collection of large amounts of data, the analysis necessary to make connections such as this will not be possible.
