CaterpillarD6 Series II tractors feature a 165-hp C9 engine to meet EPA's Tier II emissions standards. Borrowing adaptive-shifting technology from haul-truck transmissions, Cat introduces Controlled-Throttle shifting. Computers on the transmission communicate with the engine's fuel-injection controller to adapt shift performance to the working conditions. Cat says even though the C9 burns about 2 percent more fuel per hour than the D6R's engine, Series II machines move about 6 percent more loose cubic yards of material per gallon of fuel burned than their predecessors.
