Replacing the 345D, model 349E hydraulic excavator is powered by a 396-net-horsepower Cat C13 ACERT Tier 4-I engine. The new machine delivers more engine and hydraulic horsepower than its predecessor while averaging 5 percent improved fuel efficiency in typical applications, Cat says. The C13 engine operates either on ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD) or a blend of ULSD and 20-percent biodiesel. A new Engine Idle Shutdown Setting allows selecting how long the machine idles before shutting down. A heavy lift mode is said to increase the 349E's main hydraulic pressure to 5,512 psi—a 9-percent increase—while also reducing engine speed and pump flow for finer control when lifting. Cab improvements include a new, larger LCD monitor with higher resolution and an improved keyboard interface. It also serves as a display for the optional rearview camera system, which can display two camera images simultaneously.
