Cat to Shutter South Carolina Plant

May 2, 2013

Caterpillar has announced it is closing its Summerville, S.C., plant, affecting 280 workers.

The company said it will shut the transmission remanufacturing factory in 2014 based on “an extensive strategic review” of the business. It cited a decline in orders, as reported by the Charleston Post and Courier. The 200,000-square-foot factory tears down, recycles and rebuilds heavy-duty transmissions and related components for OEMs, which then resell the parts to aftermarket buyers.
