Caterpillar’s global machinery retail sales rose 13 percent in the three months through August from a year earlier, largely due to sales gains in Asia (up 27 percent) and North America (up 24 percent).

Sales dropped 5 percent in Latin American and were flat in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, according to today’s filing with the SEC covered in Business Week.

Caterpillar had said last month that it shut its main excavator plant in China for most of July after an increase in inventories.
