Our dealer in British Columbia brought an interesting story to my attention, and I’d like to pass it along to those of you that are still wrestling with the “technology” decision.

Many companies will try out a grade control system for a while as a test, and then ease into the transition and investment. But this company – Hoban Equipment Ltd. – jumped in and purchased 13 grade control systems at one time.

They did their homework and then acted with confidence and conviction. Here’s what Will Hoban, company president, says about the decision process.

Business Philosophy:

"Our success is due to people and technology. We've learned that good equipment and newer technology helps bring the better operators to the company and helps us be profitable."

Research:

"We spent two years reading reports, studies, and trade magazine articles as well as visiting suppliers at ConExpo and locally. By this time, I had done a little bit more research on the systems and which ones to try out, so we contacted our local dealer and they were awesome. They came out; they set the system up; and they had us running within three days on the grader."

Performance:

We were lucky (before the GPS systems) to get plus-minus two to three centimeters, and with the dual mast GPS-based system we're plus-minus half a centimeter on our target. This is also using a brand new machine, a really tight machine, but without the system, we couldn't do it. We're completely stakeless on the whole project as well."

Productivity:

"Having machine control on our equipment has definitely helped us speed up our production," Hoban says. "It depends on what stage we're at with a project, but in many cases we're looking at literally a 50 percent increase in productivity when we have a good operator in the machine who appreciates the technology."

The Future:

"My goal is to equip all my machines with Trimble technology and add Trimble Connected Site® capabilities, so we can get accurate field reporting data. It may seem like a big deal to purchase 13 systems at once. But once we knew what we wanted, we didn't want to delay receiving the productivity, accuracy, and economic benefits. We jumped in and have no regrets."

I couldn’t have said it better myself. There’s more story to the story, so if you would like to read it, just go here
