Staff | September 28, 2010

The results of the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association's (ARMA) annual Accident Prevention Contest have been announced. A total of 107 roofing product manufacturing facilities competed for the various awards.

To ensure that all participants competed against plants of comparable size and capacity, entrants were grouped into four categories.

The President's Award, ARMA's top award, is presented annually to the operation with the lowest ARMA Index — derived by adding the OSHA Incidence Rate to the OSHA Severity Rate and dividing the sum by 10. In Group B, which included facilities with 200,000 to 300,000 labor-hours, President's Award winner was Owens Corning, Savannah, GA.

ARMA Award of Excellence winners in Group D, operations with 100,000 or fewer labor-hours worked per year, included Owens Corning (Asphalt), Atlanta, GA, and Memphis, TN. Award of Excellence recognition goes to winners in each category with the lowest ARMA Index averaged over the previous three years' totals (based on criteria developed by the Safety Contest Task Force).

ARMA Certificates of Achievement are presented to competitors showing a 25-percent improvement from the previous contest year. Recipients include GAF-ELK Corporation, Savannah, GA, Tampa, FL, and Nashville, TN; Owens Corning, Savannah, GA, and Atlanta, GA; CertainTeed Corporation, Birmingham, AL, and Peachtree City, GA; Johns Manville, Macon, GA; and TAMKO Roofing Products, Green Cove Springs, FL, and Knoxville, TN.

Recipients include Owens Corning, Savannah, GA; CertainTeed Corporation, Birmingham, AL; Johns Manville, Macon, GA; CertainTeed Corporation, Peachtree City, GA; TAMKO Roofing Products, Green Cove Springs, FL; and Owens Corning (Asphalt), Atlanta, GA, Jacksonville, FL, and Memphis, TN.
