Arizona Home for New Nikola Motors Manufacturing Plant

Nikola Motors will locate its one million square foot facility at one of the entrances of a new master planned community

January 31, 2018

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and Nikola Motor Company has announced the company has selected Buckeye, Arizona for its Nikola Motor Company hydrogen-electric semi-truck manufacturing headquarters facility. The new 500 acre, one million square foot facility will be located on the west side of Phoenix and will bring more than $1 billion in capital investment to the region by 2024.

Nikola Motor Company designs and manufactures hydrogen-electric vehicles, electric vehicle drivetrains, vehicle components, energy storage systems and hydrogen stations.

Trevor Milton, Nikola Motor's CEO, said the new manufacturing facility will create 2,000 jobs and inject more than $1 billion in capital investment to the area by 2024. Nikola intends to relocate its headquarters and R&D team to Buckeye by October.

Arizona has conditionally promised the company up to $46 million in tax incentives and job training programs based on Nikola's investments in its plant and employees.

Nikola says it has 8,000 orders for its 1,000 horsepower hydrogen-electric semi-trucks, the Nikola One sleeper and the Nikola Two day cab. Both models are designed to run up to 1,200 miles between refueling stops. Nikola plans to lease the trucks to users and will be building a network of 376 hydrogen fueling stations.

The Buckeye facility is expected to begin construction by the end of 2019.

Nikola plans field tests of truck prototypes this fall using the Nikola Two truck and Nikola test divers. Real-world testing with potential fleet customers will come after that. Testing of the Nikola One sleeper truck will begin later.

“Nikola Motor Company’s selection of Arizona demonstrates that we are leading the charge when it comes to attracting innovative, industry-disrupting companies,” said Arizona Governor Doug Ducey. “This incredible new technology will revolutionize transportation, and we’re very proud it will be engineered right here in Arizona. I thank Nikola’s CEO Trevor Milton and his entire team for this significant investment in our state.”
