The bridge over U.S.23 near Whitmore Lake in southeastern Michigan was treated to an unscheduled repair Thursday after a semi truck hauling a piece of mobile lift equipment struck the underside of the bridge. Twitter contributors said it looked like the lift truck was not secured properly to the flatbed.
Traffic in both directions was closed and early reports were that the section of U.S.23 would be closed for an indefinite time.
However, MDot quickly moved in with demo equipment and took down the damaged overpass.
The bridge was listed as a priority project for MDot, having made the national list of worst bridges but work had not yet been started.
Traffic was flowing again by 5 am this morning. The bridge itself will be closed until MDot can rebuild it.
